Rum History

The Rise of the Nectar of the Gods

The history of this drink dates back to the 1600s when sugarcane was first introduced to the Caribbean. This drink soon gained popularity and was even considered a currency for trade.

Sailing the Seven Seas for Rum

As trade routes expanded, this drink became a staple among sailors and pirates. It was thought to help prevent scurvy, and its high alcohol content made it a valuable commodity. Sailors would often dilute it with water to make it last longer, leading to the creation of what is now known as “rum punches”.

Rum, Revolution, and Prohibition

The American Revolution saw a decline in the popularity of this drink, as the newly formed United States placed taxes on molasses, making it more expensive. The Temperance Movement and Prohibition in the 1900s also caused a decline in its popularity.
